In March this year, I will be cycling in the Cape Argus Cycle Tour on behalf of Hillsong Africa Foundation to support Prison Ministry.

It’s hard to explain the depth of our passion for reaching those whom society often discards and deems unworthy of redemption. Our commitment is to see beyond the crimes of those we encounter, many of whom are themselves victims of the generational cycle of systemic inequality, abuse, substance abuse, and broken homes. As a team, we encounter not only offenders but also the victims of their crimes, many of whom are their communities and families whose lives have been broken by their actions. We witness the ripple effects of trauma and recognise that addressing crime requires addressing the condition of the heart, because we know that what lies in the heart flows into actions.

Hillsong Africa Foundation is built on the pillars of social sustainable impact. Prison Ministry outworks this vision by not only sharing the Gospel but also facilitating restorative programmes for incarcerated men and women, which focus on building identity, worth, strength, and purpose. Additionally, we foster a reintegration process that includes the Job Journey programme, which equips men and women with the practical skills needed to be contributors to society. These initiatives promote accountability, healing, and reintegration, empowering offenders to take responsibility for their actions while honouring the victims’ pursuit of justice and restoration.

Almost every man and woman we work with has been touched by a cycle of gender-based violence and abuse, perpetuating harm born from their own unresolved trauma. As an advocate for reform in the justice system, I am cycling to symbolically represent the mission of Prison Ministry in breaking these cycles to eliminate the prevalence of crime and violence in future generations.
